About the Artist

I am an interdisciplinary artist, although primarily a painter. I was part of a migration to Maine in the 70’s, and have lived, worked, taught, and created in Brooks ME for over 40 years. I co-founded the first cooperative gallery in Belfast and continue to be involved in this community’s artistic fiber. Originally from Philadelphia, my Ukrainian parents passed on cultural traditions which I still carry on, and which have affected my work through the years. My ‘PYSANKA: Renewal of Life’ series done in the 90’s, was recently exhibited at the Icon Museum in Clinton, MA My ongoing current series ‘Threads’ began in 2008 and focuses on women, sewing, and fashion. It has morphed and evolved to include images of spools of thread, mannequins, the female figure, and her multi-layered relationship with clothing. The most recent evolution has depicted ‘Repair’ both literally and metaphorically as a call to action to not only mend material things but to stitch the torn parts of ourselves and the world. A new subject has just been introduced, a Thimble, as a metaphor for protection. I work primarily in oils on canvas but have used collaged sewing pattern paper as a ground for my ‘Body Language’ series, which has recently been exhibited in a solo show at the University of Maine’s Zillman Museum, Other works include materials such as wax sticks, watercolor, charcoal and gouache, and birch bark.
